Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
