This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
