The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
