Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of files that included little new data.
